For 15 years, Director of Recreation and Club Sports Betsy Bruce has been teaching a winter-term project called Yarn to Garment, a weaving and garment construction class. Over the course of several weeks, participants learn how to create a garment from idea and yarn selection to sewing and fitting the finished piece.

On dressing a loom, Bruce says, "Oh boy, that’s a process. I think most students don’t realize how many times they’re actually going to touch each thread of yarn and how much time it takes.... Then they get to weave, and the smiles on their faces come up."

Completed garments were modeled in a fashion show and put on display in the Firelands Association for the Visual Arts Main Gallery from January 6 through February 7.
